The King Who Tricked Hitler

DOCUMENTARY
Executive Producer John M. Florescu

This is one of the last and greatest untold stories of the Second World War, revealed by the last surviving Chief of State, King Michael I of Romania. “We took the train to Berlin to see the other side of the coin and we had lunch with Hitler. It wasn’t an enjoyable meeting.” It is the story of a King’s decision who, in a critical moment of the Second World War, relinquished Germany’s support, guiding Romania towards the Allies, thus bringing about a quicker end to the war. It is a story of palatial intrigues. And a story of deceptions. From Buckingham Palace to Bucharest. From Moscow to Washington. Lost diplomatic signals, aristocrat spies and blackmail at gun point. And the courage of a young king who dared. Romania, at the outbreak of the Second World War, was a very young nation, with an age of only 20 years.
The King Who Tricked Hitler is a historical documentary that was selected by the History Channel UK network in January 2017. It was also selected in the official competition of the Pessac International Film Festival in France.

The Unseen Nixon Interviews

INTERVIEW
Executive Producer John M. Florescu

PREVIOUSLY unseen footage from Sir David Frost’s historic interview with ex-US president Richard Nixon is to be aired for the first time.
Sir David scored a huge coup when he persuaded the former president to speak to him exclusively in 1977, three years after Nixon’s resignation. Over 28 hours of interviews were recorded but only five hours were broadcast.
Sir David has decided to make The Nixon Tapes – to be shown on the Discovery Channel on June 17 – to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Watergate. The most famous political scandal in US history began in 1972 when five intruders were discovered inside the Democratic National Committee Headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington.
They were caught bugging the office and shredding documents. The trail led all the way to the Nixon administration. After he was caught on tape discussing a cover-up, Nixon resigned in August 1974 – the first US president to do so.
Veteran broadcaster Sir David remembers the 12 days he spent grilling Nixon as “drenchingly tense”. “He tried to deny everything on the first day. On the second day he was prepared to admit more, under pressure. By the end of the two days we were both absolutely exhausted and we knew we’d got something historic.
“I think he approached these interviews hoping to come out spotless. In the end he made many more admissions – particularly about Watergate – than he’d ever planned to do, and more than we’d ever dreamed possible.”
The programme is to be produced and presented by Sir David, who will combine the new footage with old excerpts and his own insights.

The Strategic Humor Initiative

COMEDY SHOW
Executive Producer John M. Florescu

PBS comedy show mixes humor with current events. David Frost is presenting a hilarious show featuring Jimmy Carr, Olivia Colman, Hugh Dennis, David Mitchell, Jimmy Tingle, Mary Walsh. The idea was to create a topical comedy and variety show hosted by Sir David Frost, recorded in London and adapted transatalanticaly for broadcasting by WGBH Boston (and then on to all the Public Broadcast Service channels in the States) and the Canadian Broadcasting Company in Canada.
The show was co-hosted by Jimmy Tingle a US comedian and a Canadian comic actress, Mary Walsh, the star of one of Canada’s most successful and long-running comedy shows, “This Hour Has 22 Minutes”.
And if that sounds complicated, it was. Written and created by the London team, but with inserts recorded in the US and Canada in concert with us, taped in advance and then satellite-linked over to the UK to be edited in time to show to the London audience, the show then had three different versions of itself edited for the UK, UIS and Canadian versions.
This led to long long three or four-way Conference Calls, where we quickly discovered that there was no love lost between the US and the Canadian production teams, so we tended to sit back and let them tussle a bit before coming up with a possible solution.
